In the 1920s, German scientists noted DHA’s skin-darkening properties while using it for medicinal purposes. Later, in the 1950s, Eva Wittgenstein at the University of Cincinnati further explored these effects during research on DHA as a treatment for children with glycogen storage disease. While administering the compound, she noticed incidental staining on the skin, particularly in areas of accidental spillage. These observations, although not initially focused on cosmetic applications, laid the groundwork for future sunless tanning products.
